Severe Facial Trauma

A 72-year-old man arrives via EMS. He was in an argument with his son who smashed him in the face with a large glass vase. The patient has decreased level of consciousness and significant injury to the face. Primary survey will not reveal any other injuries. He will require intubation, which is complicated by a bloody oropharynx and swollen larynx. Any attempts to intubate through the mouth will fail and the patient will require a surgical airway.
