This escape room was designed to allow novice facilitators to get experience facilitating simulations in a fun, non-medical, low-stress environment.
A physician and two students are on call overnight during one of the biggest spring storms in recent years. They get word from one of the nurses that the basement appears to be flooding, and one of the sump pumps is broken. They will need to work together to build a backup sump pump, and help rid the basement of water.
Overall Goal: Utilize effective communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills to solve puzzles together.
Time Recommended: 25 minutes total (5 min Setup | 20 min Scenario | 20 min Debrief)

A good prebriefing is an essential component of running effective simulations, as it sets the stage for everything that comes after it1-3. An effective prebrief will create a safe container for learning, and in doing so, help participants feel more comfortable pushing their limits, sharing their thoughts and feelings, and buying into the experience. In turn, this will enhance engagement, participation, and learning. To that end, the prebriefing process needs to cover a lot of information1-5, which can make it daunting to novice or non-expert facilitators. To help, we have consulted the relevant literature and put together a prebrief guide to ensure that you have the tools you need to run an effective pre-briefing session.
Throughout the pre-brief, it is important that you convey your commitment to respecting learners and their perspective2-4, and establish and maintain the simulation as a safe space for learning1,4,5.
Prebrief Guide (Sample Phrases in Italics)
Welcome learners. Introduce yourself, your role, and your experience with simulation.
Go over the time requirements for the simulation, when breaks will occur, how learners should handle incoming calls or texts, etc.
Clarify the learning objectives for the simulation1-5. Give information on the purpose of the simulation without giving out specific actions or information that might compromise the learning experience for participants.
Explain how participants will be evaluated (formative/summative/not evaluated). Briefly discuss the debrief process that will take place at the end of the simulation.
Give details on what expectations are for the learners' behaviour during the simulation, setting basic ground rules2-5. Go over expectations for yourself as the facilitator. Reinforce the simulation as a learning environment, where mistakes aren't something to be punished but opportunities for further learning.
This could be a good place to pause and ask learners if they have any additional expectations, fears, comments, or questions about the topic for the day.
Ensure all participants agree to the confidentiality expectations of the simulation. Often, this will follow the mantra of "What happens in the simulation stays in the simulation," where learners and instructors agree not to share information on others' performance or scenario details outside of the simulation environment.
Explain that you've done what you can to make the simulation as real as possible, but acknowledge the limitations. Ask the learner to commit to doing what they can to act as if everything was real, explaining that the quality of their learning will depend on their willingness to participate as fully as possible. For the first simulation with a new group, it could be helpful to explain the importance of a mutual fiction contract.
Explain the different roles in the simulation and assign learners to them. If you have predetermined scripts for certain roles, hand them out here.
Explain the resources that will be available for the participants to use, how they should call for help in the simulation, what your role will be in providing information.
Orient participants to simulation space, equipment, manikin, etc. This can also be done by allowing participants to explore the simulation space and manikin for themselves.

Facilitator Notes: All you need to do at this stage is narrate. The first things that the participants will need to do on the next stage is locate the right key for the sump pump box and find the proper code for the combination lock
Narration: It's mid-april, and you're on call during one of the worst spring storms anyone can remember. This, combined with the spring melt, means there's a lot of water around. All of a sudden, you see one of the nurses come by with their scrubs soaked up to their knees. "Huge leak in the basement!" They tell you. The maintenance staff have gone camping for the weekend, and so you're left alone to sort this out. "Last time this happened Al the maintenance guy had to build that spare sump pump we have to get all the water out."
"I'm on it. Come with me y'all." you say, hoping to make a good impression with the nursing staff at your new hospital.
"You just gotta find the key for the sump pump box and then the box itself...no one knows where any of that stuff is except for Al" the nurse tells you before you go off.

Narration: When you get down to the basement, you find the sump pump box (point to the box), which appears to be double-locked. On the wall, there's a key hanger with a ton of unlabelled keys on it, and a grid map with a bunch of lock combinations on it. If you solve those puzzles, you'll be able to get into the box and get the pump in working order.
Facilitator Note: The participants need to figure out how to crack both locks on the pump box. To do so, they will need to solve the grid map and the logic puzzle that will point them to the right combination and keys.
The map puzzle will be a series of icons, the first letter of whose name will correspond to a cardinal direction that they will need to travel along the grid.

Narration: You crack the locks and pop the box open. Inside, you see a ton of random pieces for the sump pump - and no instructions. The main sump pump is in the room next door (in this case behind the TV in the presentation room), so you'll need to use that one as a reference for putting this one together. Only one person at a time can go and run to look at that pump, and then they can't place any pieces for the current pump you're working on.
Facilitator Note: This puzzle involves participants running one at a time to look at a model of the pump, and then running back to help the rest of their team build it. The model will be hidden behind a barrier on another table. Your main job here is to keep up the enthusiasm and energy in the room.
Rules: Only one person at a time can go look at the solution, and the person who just went cannot place blocks themselves. They need to wait until the next person to go comes back. If the same person goes to look every time, then they cannot place blocks.
